The Salzburg Easter Festival takes place from March 27 to April 6, 2026, and was founded in 1967 by Herbert von Karajan. The main focus is on opera. The supporting program is shaped by numerous concerts.
The founding of the Salzburg Easter Festival
The Salzburg Easter Festival was founded in 1967 by Herbert von Karajan as a complement to the Salzburg Festival held in August and quickly established itself as an exclusive and artistically brilliant festival. Herbert von Karajan’s fundamental idea in founding the Easter Festival was the desire to further develop the concept of the festival in Salzburg, with the Easter Festival never viewing itself as an offshoot of the Salzburg Festival in summer, but rather as capable of developing a completely independent profile. This could only be achieved through top-class directors, high-caliber performers, and elaborate opera productions.
